Strength, tone and flexibility are promised by this whole-body Barre workout.

Inspired by ballet training, Pilates and yoga. It features high reps of low-impact, high-intensity movements that build strength, tone and flexibility. We workout at ballet barres, in the centre and on mats to target every part of your body - you will never get bored with this workout! And the music is mostly 80s pop & rock so you are sure to feel energised and uplifted!

The effect is strong toned limbs, glutes and core; flexible, fluid graceful movements, confident posture and mind-set. Oh and a post-class high!

If you're looking for a new style of class, a whole body workout that is intense but also full of joy and self-expression - this is the one for you.

Do I need to know yoga or ballet to join the Barre class?

Absolutely not, this is a beginner's class which uses ballet exercises, we are most certainly NOT ballet dancing.

I will teach you the ballet postures and exercises and the yoga and pilates postures so that you can carry them out safely and effectively.

Because it works! Barre is highly effective at targeting the areas of the body that we can find difficult to strengthen and tone.

Ballet dancers and strong and fit - the movements in Barre are based on ballet exercises and combined with pilates for the core and yoga for flexibility.

Barre Disco combines all of this with really, really great music and a lighthearted vibe, this is not a 'bossy' class, the workout is intense but the vibe is kind and fun.

What is Barre good for?

Barre is HIGHLY effective at toning and strengthening legs, glutes and core because the focus is on alignment and isometric strength training which is repetitive small, closely controlled movements close to the body.

The class is set to fab music from 60s to 90s, so it is also a great mood-booster.

What should I wear for Barre?

Anything you feel comfortable stretching in, for example leggings or shorts and a tshirt or vest top. Most practice bare footed but if you prefer there are barre socks available which have a grippy sole.

Is this class suitable for beginners?

Yes, this is a beginners Barre class.

What's the history of Barre?

Barre was developed by ballerina, Lotte Berk in the 50s, she instructed the likes of Joan Collins and Barbara Streisand in ballet fitness, before she injured her back and and discovered how to use a handrail to stretch and strengthen herself.

Emma Groove & Pound

Emma has danced for fun all her life and loves to share her love of music and movement in her Groove, Barre Yoga and Drum Circle classes, encouraging freedom of expression, joy, curiosity and a healthy dose of silliness.

She likes to remind us that Plato said “Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul” and that's her excuse for always breaking into dance! She believes we are all born with an innate desire to dance and that everyone should be empowered to dance in a way that feels good to them.

Emma trained with Misty Tripoli of the World Groove Movement, Marla Leigh of the Frame Drum Academy, the Village Drum Circle, Barre Concept and Pound. She is also our Ashtanga Yoga teacher and Studio Director!
